Would you like to wear a T-shirt or hat, or drink from a mug, or display a bumper sticker on your car that tells the world how you feel about what WalMart is doing to our communities?
We would love to help you express yourself that way, and until recently, you could have displayed any of the following designs on a hat, or shirt, or mug. But WalMart threatened a trademark law suit against the company that was imprinting these designs for us, and even though the trademark threat was frivolous, the printing company decided that it wasn't worth hiring lawyers to be able to retain our business.
Wal-Mart has now sued for damages because we won't promise never to display these designs again. Once Wal-Mart loses, we will again be able to help you express your feelings about WalMart in this way. Until then, however, we can't.
As this issue may not be resolved for quite some time you have my permission to use the designs in question for personal use.
The court filing states that all proceeds from sales after legal expenses were to be donated to charity. So if you use the designs please consider supporting one of the many organizations fighting against Wal-Mart's oppressive business tactics.
A big company like Wal Mart has deep pockets at its disposal to silence its critics. It can afford to deliberately run up its opponents' costs in the hope that they cannot afford to continue. We do not have the resources to shoulder the full burden of the fight, but Public Citizen has agreed to represent us. Fortunately, with talented litigators and truth on our side, we do not need to match Wal Mart's budget. But we do need your help to stop Wal Mart from running roughshod over its critics. Your tax-deductible contribution can help make all the difference to keeping free speech alive. Please follow this link to make a donation to Public Citizen to support our effort.
